NAIDOC

Cultural storytelling takes centre stage
Cultural program for NAIDOC Week
Every year, RESQ+ partners with Bidjara Elders and the broader community to curate a vibrant arts and cultural program for NAIDOC Week.
The 2022 Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! theme came to life through various cultural celebrations, comedy acts, art competitions, fashion parades, exhibitions, marches and more across South West and Central West Queensland. Around 160 Charleville and Cunnamulla community members attended two evenings of charismatic cultural storytelling, performances and comedy by internationally touring entertainer Sean Choolburra.
Elderly residents were also treated to Sean’s cultural comedy, dancing and didgeridoo at the Charleville RSL.
Regional Community Development Manager Sue Bylett said Sean took the time to chat with every audience member after his show.
“He made everyone at the RSL feel special.”
The shows were produced in partnership with RESQ+, the Cunnamulla Aboriginal Corporation of Health (CACH), Charleville Police and Healthy Ageing.
The popular NAIDOC Art Competition was expanded this year with 80 entries received from across both Charleville and Mitchell regions.
Sue Bylett said students from kindergarten to high school submitted artwork along with community members and RESQ+ participants.
“There was some brilliant artwork, and I’m excited to see next year’s entries,” said Sue.
RESQ+ aims to hold events that have an impact and drive education and understanding to community members about NAIDOC and what it means.
